Do you have rats or mice in your home? If so, you need to eliminate the rodent problem before they create a mess with your garbage, electrical wiring, etc. If you aren't keen on using over-the-counter chemicals that can be harmful to you, your family and your pets, then you may want to consider trying a natural approach. Here are three ways you can naturally repel these annoying pests:

Peppermint Oil

While you may love the refreshing scent of peppermint oil, mice do not. In fact, they find the smell repulsive, which makes them turn around and run away. However, you have to make sure you're using the right stuff. You can't use the extract that you can buy from the supermarket. Instead, you need to locate 100% pure peppermint oil. You can usually find this at a health food store. Once you have located the right oil, you have two options for using it. You can douse cotton balls in the peppermint oil and place them where you don't want mice, at entryways and where the mice currently hold up their fort. These will need to be replaced every couple of weeks to keep the scent alive. An alternative option is to make a peppermint oil spray. This needs to be strong and should be sprayed along baseboards, entryways, etc. – anywhere the mice may go.

Cayenne Pepper

Pepper has a very strong scent to it. For many humans, it can be too strong. With that being said, there is a very high chance that it is going to play in your favor if you use it against the mice that are invading your home. However, you need to use the right type of pepper. Black pepper isn't recommended, but cayenne pepper is. All you need to do is sprinkle the cayenne pepper in areas of the home that you know the mice are present. Once the mice inhale the pepper, they'll go running for the hills.

Adopt a Cat

If there is one animal that you can have inside the home that will scare mice away, it's a cat. Cats have a killer instinct and will happily hunt mice in your home for you. If you don't have a cat, head to your local animal shelter and find out that can be a part of the family. Not only will you have a mouse killer, you will also have a lifelong friend.

When none of the above seems to work, it may be a sign that your rodent problem is too large for you to handle on your own. Give a local rodent exterminator, like Greenleaf Organic Pest Management, a call for expert assistance.
